A pulley is a simple machine
with a simple name
One pulls on the rope,
and the other end
follows, with a slight detour
in the upward direction

The usage of the simple name
grew from the same impulse
that calls William “Billy”
and George “Georgie”
even when the nickname
isn’t shorter than the original
