Paganism on the defensive

be still and know
that your heart
cannot literally
beat out of your chest,
cannot pierce the skin
and fling itself
out onto the pavement,
or in this case the coffee table,
be still and know
that I am god,
be still and feel
the hammering
of the woodpecker
on the oak tree,
it will do damage
but not fatally,
be still and know
I, too, am a man
